Unless your tie is channeling the freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, chances are you don’t want it blowing in the wind. That’s where tie clips come in. Also known as tie bars, these tiny pieces of hardware offer a polished finish to any tailored look while keeping neckties from going rogue in the slightest breeze (or worse, dipping into the punch bowl).
While novelty tie clips with logos are certainly great for making a statement, minimalist tie bars are also worth having on hand for those not-so-flashy occasions. Plus, they eliminate difficult last-minute fashion decisions as you’re getting dressed for weddings, parties, and other stylish celebrations.
What Are the Best Tie Clips?
There are a few things you’ll need to consider before choosing the best tie clips to complete your outfit. Tie bars look seamless with two-piece ensembles, and you’ll want to make sure your clip’s polish matches hardware such as jacket buttons, your belt buckle, cufflinks, or watch. If you’re wearing a three-piece suit, it’s OK to forgo a tie clip if your vest is already keeping your necktie in place.
If you’re going for a traditional look, use a tie clip that measures the entire width of your tie. For a more modern look, try a tie bar that goes 1/2 to 3/4 across your necktie’s width. As far as placement, aim to clip your tie bar between the third and fourth buttons of your shirt, or somewhere between the middle to bottom of your sternum. The exception to this rule is when you’re buttoning up your jacket: instead, show off your tie clip and place it above your jacket’s top button where it’s visible.
Silver and gray tie clips are safe bets, but gold is also a great option as long as you keep in mind the color of your suit, tie, and other metal accessories. A minimalist metal tie bar is also a versatile pick, but you can also opt for tie pins or novelty tie clips that let you show off your personality (or even your favorite sports team).
